The Phoenix College Women's Soccer team is heading back to the NJCAA Region I Division II Finals after a hard-fought 2–1 victory over Scottsdale Community College on Friday morning at Hoy Stadium.
The Bears, now 12-2-3 overall and 11-1-2 in ACCAC play, secured their spot in the championship match thanks to early offensive precision and another standout defensive effort.
Phoenix struck first in the 19th minute, when Amaya Hernandez finished a pass from Carmen Coronado to give the Bears a 1–0 lead. Just after halftime, Angelica Leal extended the advantage, again assisted by Coronado, who continues to demonstrate why she was named ACCAC Player of the Year.
Scottsdale's Sydney Delaney converted a penalty kick in the 84th minute to make it 2–1, but Phoenix's backline, anchored by goalkeeper Bijou Holm, held strong in the closing minutes. Holm recorded seven saves in the win.
With the victory, Phoenix advances to the Region I Division II Championship against Pima Community College, renewing one of the most competitive rivalries in the conference. It will be the fourth straight year ( 5 in the last 6 years) Phoenix/Pima will face off in the finals.
Phoenix will now look to reclaim the regional crown after falling to Pima in last year's final. Kickoff for the championship is set for November 4, 6pm at Pima.
