PHOENIX, Ariz. – In a much-anticipated early-season clash between two nationally ranked powers, No. 11 Phoenix College Women's Soccer battled No. 9 Pima Community College to a 1-1 draw Saturday afternoon at Hoy Stadium.
After a scoreless first half, the Bears struck first in the 58th minute when freshman Amaya Hernandez finished a feed from veteran forward Carmen Coronado to put Phoenix College up 1-0. Pima answered ten minutes later as Yajaira Cervantes converted the equalizer to level the match at 1-1.
Both defenses held strong over the final 20 minutes. Goalkeeper Bijou Holm recorded four saves for Phoenix College, while Coronado paced the attack with four shots and two on target. The Bears outshot the Aztecs 9-5 and earned a 5-4 advantage in corner kicks.
With the result, Phoenix College moves to 0-0-2 on the season while Pima stands at 0-1-2. The Bears will look to turn draws into wins as they face Gateway at home on Sept. 9th, 5:45pm.
