Bears Set for Region I Division II Semifinal Showdown Against Pima

Bears Set for Region I Division II Semifinal Showdown Against Pima

The stage is set for postseason basketball as No. 4 seed Phoenix College heads to Tucson to face No. 1 seed Pima Community College in the Region I, Division II Semifinals on Wednesday, March 4. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. at the West Campus Aztec Gymnasium.

Back-to-Back Postseason Appearances

Under the leadership of Head Coach Prayer Branham, Phoenix has now reached the conference tournament in back-to-back seasons — a testament to the steady growth and culture being built within the program. The Bears finished the regular season 12-15 overall and 9-9 in conference play, they've proved they can compete with anyone in the ACCAC.

Phoenix averaged 62.6 points per game this season while shooting 40.3% from the field. Defensively and on the glass, they remained competitive throughout the year, pulling down 30.5 rebounds per contest.

At the heart of the Bears' success is freshman forward Jada Wilson, who has emerged as one of the conference's most consistent offensive forces. Wilson averaged 16.1 points and 7.9 rebounds per game overall while shooting an efficient 46.8% from the field. In conference play, she elevated her game even further, averaging 17.1 points per contest and shooting nearly 50% from the floor.

Her ability to score through contact, attack the rim, and control the paint gives Phoenix a legitimate inside presence heading into the semifinals.

Sophomore guard Steffy Cervantes has provided veteran leadership and stability in the backcourt, averaging 9.8 points per game while logging over 31 minutes per contest.

Familiar Foe, Narrow Margins

Pima, the reigning conference champions, are led by sophomore center Kiley Sours Miller and have earned the No. 1 seed for a reason. The Bears have faced Pima three times this season and dropped all three matchups. However, the second meeting in Tucson pushed the Aztecs to overtime — proving Phoenix is capable of going toe-to-toe with the conference's top seed on their home floor.

The winner of Wednesday's semifinal will advance to the Region I Division II Championship, where they will face the winner of No. 3 Scottsdale Community College vs. No. 2 Mesa Community College.
