Bears Rally but Fall Short at Scottsdale

Phoenix College women's basketball battled back from an early deficit but came up short in a 64–59 loss to Scottsdale Community College.

The Bears fell behind early after Scottsdale jumped out to a quick lead, taking a 22–15 advantage after the first quarter and extending it to 36–26 at halftime. Phoenix responded with a strong third quarter, outscoring the Artichokes 15–10 to cut the deficit in half.

Phoenix continued to push in the fourth quarter, getting within two points on multiple occasions, but Scottsdale was able to hold on down the stretch and never relinquished the lead.

Steffy Cervantes led Phoenix College with 15 points, while Jada Wilson added 13 points and Daiana Hollman contributed seven rebounds. Off the bench, Mya Ruiz provided a spark with 10 points, knocking down two three-pointers.

The Bears forced 19 turnovers and held Scottsdale to 37.5 percent shooting from the field, but free-throw opportunities and second-chance points proved to be the difference late.

Phoenix College will return to action on Wednesday, January 28, when the Bears host Mesa Community College in a key conference matchup. Phoenix fell to Mesa 67–57 in the first meeting between the teams on December 13. Mesa enters the game 8–1 in conference play, sitting atop the standings, while Phoenix is 6–4 in the ACCAC, currently in fourth place. The matchup sets the stage for an exciting conference battle as the Bears look to close the gap in the standings.
