The Phoenix College women's basketball team delivered one of its most resilient performances of the season, knocking off Chandler-Gilbert Community College, 82–74, in a hard-fought double-overtime road victory. The win pushed the Bears to 4–2 in conference play and 7–8 overall, keeping them firmly in the mix near the top of the Division II standings.
Phoenix College trailed early but stayed within reach before taking control late. After regulation and the first overtime ended deadlocked, the Bears dominated the second overtime, outscoring CGCC 13–5 to secure the road win.
Cervantes Leads with Poise and Pressure
Steffy Cervantes set the tone with a standout performance, scoring 20 points on 9-of-15 shooting while playing 40 minutes. She consistently attacked the rim and created offense in key moments.
Balanced Effort Across the Lineup
Phoenix College leaned on multiple contributors to get the job done:
-
Daiana Hollman posted a strong double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds.
-
Faith James added 12 points, while Francia Rubio knocked down four three-pointers to finish with 12 points.
-
Jada Wilson contributed 10 points and 9 rebounds, battling inside in a physical contest.
-
Mya Ruiz came off the bench to score 10 points (2/3 from beyond the arc)
The Bears shot 46.4% from the field and 38.9% from three, making key shots when it mattered most despite the extended minutes.
Conference Picture
With the win, Phoenix College now sits tied for second/third in the conference at 4–2, alongside Scottsdale and Pima. Mesa Community College remains unbeaten at 6–0, while Chandler-Gilbert dropped to 2–4 in conference play.
Looking Ahead: Glendale Rematch
Phoenix College will look to keep momentum rolling on Wednesday when the Bears travel to Glendale Community College for a 5:30 PM road matchup. Phoenix College already defeated Glendale earlier this season, earning a 55–41 win on November 25 behind strong defense and rebounding.
In that first meeting, the Bears limited Glendale to just 20.9% shooting from the field and forced 22 turnovers, with balanced scoring and defensive pressure throughout the game. Phoenix College will aim to replicate that defensive intensity as conference play continues.
With confidence growing and key players stepping up in big moments, the Bears are proving they can compete deep into conference play — and Saturday's double-overtime win was another step forward.
