Bears Sweep Mesa Community College in Home Doubleheader

The No. 10 Phoenix College softball team picked up two key conference wins on March 21, sweeping Mesa Community College with scores of 5-4 and 8-3.

In Game 1, the Bears held off a late push from Mesa to secure a 5-4 victory. Phoenix College jumped out early, scoring three runs in the first two innings and adding two more in the third to build a cushion.

Gianna Baca led the way offensively, going 3-for-4 with a triple and two RBIs, while Katelyn Larney added two hits and drove in a pair. Hope Hutchins also contributed with an RBI as the Bears totaled 12 hits.

Mesa rallied with a three-run fifth inning to tighten the game, but the Bears responded in the circle. Aubree Lovo earned the win, allowing four runs over five innings, and Julianna Nava shut the door with two scoreless innings to pick up the save.

In Game 2, Phoenix College used an early offensive surge to secure an 8-3 win and complete the sweep.

The Bears plated two runs in the first inning and added two more in the second to take control early before breaking things open with a four-run sixth inning.

Olivia Deford continued her strong season, going 3-for-4 with two RBIs, while Gianna Baca added a home run and an RBI. Katelyn Larney delivered a key three-run home run, and Taylor Borup chipped in with two hits and an RBI.

In the circle, Maddison Peter earned the win, tossing five innings while allowing just two runs—none earned—and striking out seven. Julianna Nava added two innings in relief to secure her second save of the day.
