Phoenix College put together a dominant all-around performance Tuesday, sweeping Scottsdale Community College in a home doubleheader with a 12–2 run-rule victory in Game 1 followed by a 5–4 walk-off win in Game 2.
Game 1: Phoenix 12, Scottsdale 2 (5 innings)
The Bears' offense exploded early in the opener. After a scoreless first inning, Phoenix plated five runs in the second and added seven more in the third to take full control.
Phoenix racked up 13 hits in just four innings at the plate. Gianna Baca led the charge, going 2-for-2 with a double and three RBIs. Katelyn Larney finished 2-for-3 with two RBIs, while Mckayla Ethington tripled and drove in two runs. Hope Hutchins added two hits and an RBI, and Kyla Kim contributed a two-RBI performance.
Taylor Borup doubled as part of a two-hit effort, and the Bears were aggressive on the bases, recording multiple stolen bases, including two from Kim and two from Olivia Deford.
In the circle, Maddison Peter earned the win (8-1), allowing just two runs — none earned — over four innings while striking out three. Julianna Nava closed out the game, helping secure the five-inning run-rule victory.
Game 2: Phoenix 5, Scottsdale 4
Game 2 proved to be much tighter, as Scottsdale jumped out to a 3–0 lead in the first inning. Phoenix responded quickly with two runs in the bottom half and continued to chip away throughout the game.
The Bears tied the game in the fourth inning and trailed 4–3 entering the late innings before rallying once more. In the bottom of the seventh, Phoenix pushed across the winning run to secure the 5–4 walk-off victory and complete the sweep.
Larney once again delivered in a big way, going 3-for-4 with three RBIs. Olivia Deford finished 2-for-2 with a walk, while Piper Mills and Hope Hutchins each added two hits. Baca contributed an RBI double as part of the 12-hit team effort.
Aubree Lovo started in the circle, allowing three runs over three innings. Nava earned the win in relief (7-0), tossing four innings and surrendering just one unearned run while striking out three.
Phoenix was sharp defensively in the nightcap, committing no errors and turning a key double play to halt Scottsdale momentum.
With the sweep, the Bears improved to 20-2, 14-2 in conference. The Bears return to action on Saturday, March 7, when they host (RV) South Mountain in a doubleheader scheduled for 12 p.m. and 2 p.m. at Phoenix College.
