The No. 13 ranked Phoenix College softball team delivered a statement performance at home, sweeping No. 9 ranked Pima Community College in a highly anticipated Top 15 matchup.
Game 1: Phoenix 5, Pima 0
The opener belonged to Maddison Peter. The sophomore right-hander tossed a complete-game shutout, allowing six hits while striking out three and walking just one.
Offensively, the Bears struck early with a run in the first inning before breaking the game open in the fifth with a four-run surge. Kyla Kim led the way with two RBI, while Olivia Deford added two RBI of her own. Katelyn Larney chipped in with an RBI, and Gianna Baca added a key double as Phoenix capitalized on five walks and timely base running to secure the 5-0 victory.
Game 2: Phoenix 7, Pima 4
Game two tested the Bears early, but their offense responded in a big way. After falling behind, Phoenix erupted for five combined runs in the second and third innings to seize control.
Olivia Deford powered the offense with a home run and two RBI. Katelyn Larney and Mckayla Ethington each drove in two runs, while Gianna Baca continued her hot day at the plate with three hits and an RBI. Taylor Borup added two hits, including a double, as the Bears tallied 12 hits in the nightcap.
In the circle, Aubree Lovo got the start before Julianna Nava entered in relief and earned the win, improving to 6-0 on the season. Maddison Peter returned to close the final three innings, recording four strikeouts and earning her first save of the year to seal the 7-4 victory.
The Bears will look to carry that momentum into their next home doubleheader on Tuesday, March 3, when they host Scottsdale Community College at 12 p.m. and 2 p.m.
