Bears move to 3–1 against Pima this season; return to title match after 2023 runner-up finish
WICHITA, Kan. – The Phoenix College Men's Soccer team is heading back to the NJCAA Division II National Championship Final after a hard-fought 1–0 victory over Pima Community College at the Stryker Complex on Thursday afternoon. With the win, the Bears improve to 20-1-1 on the season and take a 3–1 series advantage over Pima this year.
Phoenix College wasted no time establishing momentum, scoring the match's only goal in the 27th minute. Sophomore forward Landon Vree finished a clean pass from Jordin Figueroa, giving the Bears a lead they would hold for the remaining 63 minutes.
Goalkeeper Jan Villegas continued his standout season with another shutout, recording three saves and improving his record to 16-1-1. The Bears' back line held strong under pressure, especially in the second half as Pima pushed forward with 10 shots but couldn't break through.
Phoenix College totaled eight shots in the match, with three on target, while the defense limited Pima to just four shots on goal.
With the victory, the Bears advance to the National Championship Final for the second time in three seasons. Phoenix College finished as the national runner-up in 2023 and now returns seeking the program's first national title.
Kickoff for the championship match is scheduled for November 22, 3pm MST at the Stryker Complex.
The Bears will face CCBC Essex in the Champioship Final.
