Bears Open 2026 With Momentum Behind Backcourt–Frontcourt Duo

The Phoenix College Bears rang in the 2026 calendar year with confidence, securing an 81–76 overtime victory over Grand Canyon University JV on January 3 and extending their winning streak to two games. The win was fueled by the steady leadership and production of Damion Byrd II and AJ Ajawin, who continue to set the tone as the Bears' top offensive options and all-around leaders.

Damion Byrd II Sets the Pace

Guard Damion Byrd II (#1) delivered a statement performance to open the year, pouring in 30 points in 36 minutes while attacking from all three levels. Byrd finished 8-for-25 from the field, knocked down 3 three-pointers, and was nearly automatic at the line, going 11-for-13. He added 3 rebounds, 3 assists, and 2 steals, consistently creating pressure and closing the game strong in overtime.

On the season, Byrd has emerged as one of the most reliable guards in the conference:

  • 15.8 points per game (team-high)

  • 37.9% from three-point range

  • 84.6% from the free-throw line

  • 3.8 assists per game

His scoring efficiency and ability to control tempo have made him the engine of the Bears' offense, especially in late-game situations.

AJ Ajawin Does the Dirty Work

Against GCU JV, Ajawin logged 36 minutes, pulling down 7 rebounds, dishing out 6 assists, and collecting 3 steals, all while anchoring the Bears defensively and facilitating ball movement.

Ajawin has been just as consistent throughout the season, ranking among the conference leaders in multiple categories:

  • 15.5 points per game

  • 8.7 rebounds per game (team high)

  • 4.4 assists per game

  • Shooting 53.1% from the field

Balanced Effort Fuels the Win

Phoenix College also received strong contributions from the supporting cast. Trystan Williams provided a spark off the bench with 17 points and 14 rebounds, while Jamison Turner chipped in 11 points. The Bears shot 42.9% from three and 81.8% from the free-throw line, key factors in closing out the overtime victory.

Looking Ahead

With Byrd and Ajawin leading the team in scoring and ranking among the conference's top producers, the Bears are building momentum at the right time.
