Opening day for the Phoenix College Bears men's basketball team (1-0), started on a high note, with a decisive win over the Park University Buccaneers JV team; 127-67. The game was filled with highlight dunks, 3 point shots, defensive plays and solid team play. We got Coach Eason's overview of the game after it ended.
Coach Eason's Review….
Offense
- Started slowly, but picked up towards the middle of the first half, and kept it going.
- Too many unforced turnovers
- 29 assists on 47 field goals
- 1.4 points per possession (FG% 54%/3FG% 44%/FT% 85%)
- Took a step back in our half court and full court execution
Defense
- Held them to .70 points per possession
- Over helped at times, causing 2 way close outs; instead of stunting early
- Rebounding was not as good as the numbers showed, but it got better as the game went on
- Zone is still inconsistent, but showed solid potential
- Transition defense was solid, but has plenty of room for improvement
Personnel
- Michael Rogers (21pts, 4rebs, and 4asts and Jamar Brown (20pts, 8rebs, 4asts, and 2stls), the top returners from last season, lead as expected
- Jason Kimbrough Jr. had a solid game with 14pts, 4rebs, 12asts, and 4stls; but he has to take care of the ball better (7 turnovers)
- Nainoa Peters hit 5 3s, giving us 17pts and 6rebs off the bench
- Fellow starters Duane Rogers III (14pts and 4rebs) and Ruben Cazares (14pts and 10rebs) put all 5 starters in double figures scoring
- 10 of the 11 guys that played scored
Overview
"We got the win, despite inconsistency on both ends. Our ability to capitalize and keep runs going must be better, as we continue to play. The returners must lead by example, not just in the box score. As a team, we have to trust the system; playing with pace and efficiency. Those things will increase our ability to play at a consistently high level.
The Bears are back at home Friday, Nov. 11th vs CSN as they host their annual Bears Tip-Off Showcase. Game time is set for 3:00 pm.
